The opposition to legalization (their irrational argument)

April 15, 2010

The link below is some (weakly held) argument against the new Cal. Ballot measure for legal weed:

http://nipitinthebud2010.org/open_ltr.html

Here are my counter-points:

1.  The war on drugs does not work.  It’s a waste of money, especially when it comes to cannabis.

2. Doesn’t make any sense.  Alcohol is legal and we have leaders (and alcohol is more destructive than cannabis).

3. Taxing drugs (alcohol) is as American as you can get.

4.  What else are you going to do in Alaska, in December at -50 degrees?

5. Marijuana is a medicine.  It is the opposite of harmful when used properly.  Yes, of course any drug when abused will cause harm.  That is another issue that should be determined by the individual, not the state.  Most of the money on the war on drug should be spent on rehab, not prisons and spy planes.

6.  Yeah don’t smoke 5 joints a day for 10 years.  Also with stronger weed and vaporizer people can ingest less amounts.  There are also studies that show the opposite of this btw.

7. Who is more stupid and causes more social issues:  a drunk or a stoned person.  A stoned person drives slower, is more apt to be creative in a crisis than a drunk, who is more apt to crash his car into another car head on and get into a fight over nothing.

8. I agree parents that abuse drugs can have a bad influence on their children.  Yet there are many examples of adults learning from a parent’s mistake (my new neighbor for one told me such a story yesterday).  In reality if you want to be parent you should have to get a license.  Prove you can parent by some kind of standard, instead of this constant raising of dysfunctional family dynamics (yes I do tangent a bit, and ironically I don’t smoke).

Conclusion:  Alexandra D. Datig’s arguments are not logically laid out in a format that is considered proper debate.  It is important to be objective in making decisions, and I do not see her open letter as such.  Her ‘Alaska’ comments, are not showing any correlation between legalization in Alaska and teenage use.  There could be many other factors.  Social studies must include STUDYING.  Hours and hours of study and then determining correlation.  Science when debating science.

Cannabis is a medicine with a history of 1000′s of years of healing people and one of the most important crops for our worldwide economy to have any chance of being sustainable (hemp).  The reality is people who wish to smoke will smoke, so let’s garner our society to reality, not towards some Taliban kite banning direction.

Disinformation has no place in political discourse, no matter someone’s passions or opinions.  The time is now to legalize cannabis.

Now go to the shop, buy a cool tee shirt help The Bong Girl support NORML in ending prohibition of pot.

-Drew Adams, founder

one more quote I found on their site:

Opposition supporter Nate Holden former Los Angeles City Councilman and California State Senator also made the following statement:  “We must not legalize marijuana in the State of California.  The voters must be mindful of the fact that to do so would be opening the doors to import major crime and killings, as has been seen south of the border.”

The whole reason Mexico legalized personal use was because of all the violence, not the other way around.
